Kiko, 19, Bronx NY
Fashion Inspiration: Solange knowles, Titania Ingles, Hedi Slimane, Pharell Williams, Kanye west (There's more, but I don't wanna overload you).
Fashion Goals: I guess I would say that My goal is to start making money for what I to and to hold weight in the "fashion world" or really the world in general. I would also like to get to a point where I'm on top of my game all the time. Like it's kind of hard for me to want to be best dressed when i have to wake up at the break of dawn for class. I don't particularly feel glamorous in the mornings, I'm just like, "ESCORT ME BACK TO BED PLEASE!!!!!!"
Fashion struggles: I as a Designer/ Consumer, its the cost of it all. When I'm creating a new garment, I want high quality fabrics, at minimal cost. Mind you, i'm a student and most of us students have a tight budget, but we still want to slay every chance we get. So I guess the question is, how to be fly and cost conscious at the same time.
Aspirations: I aspire to to use my creative abilities to change the world. In the future I want to be able to start an organization what allows inner-city children/teens to hone in on they're talents, whether art, design, visual performance, what have you. I just want to give everyone the chance to understand the amount they can contribute to the world through creativity.
Fav shops: I'm huge on thrifting so, Beacons Closet, Goodwill, Metropolis. When I shop mainstream: H&M, Forever 21, Urban Outfitters.
Design Journey: Well, I started out just only wanting to be an Interior design, but I've always had a love for fashion. By the time i began my junior year in high school, There was like this this trend where everyone started bleaching all their denim jeans, cutting them into shorts and distressing them. I started making some for my friends around school, which was pretty cool i guess. I never charged, but looking back at it, it feels like I was prostituting my talents, but anyways, as time went on, I just started to thrift because I didn't always have the funds to by "new stuff" so whenever i did that, sometimes I found the clothes to be a little dated and I didn't want it to look like I was steal clothes out of my moms closet,(even though sometimes would be). So I would I guess, Remix it like sew a pocket on to an old top or add little embellishments to make the garment more modern. When I got to my First year a parsons, I took a "soft structures" class, which is like sewing 101. The Course was taught be a young designer named Titania Ingles, Who has had her line in fashions week and all that, so she's pretty much the shit. Well anyways, I remember design a bag made of burlap and cotton jersey knit. Which sounds corny, but it was a big deal because it was new to me, because it was my first time making a pattern. After i finished that course, I knew enough to know how to make patterns for garments and make basic things from scratch like, shirts, skirts, dresses sweaters, you know, the minor things. Now that I have more experience I take thrifted items, things from regular retail shops or even my moms old stuff and take out of the seams and make something new. Like, I could make a skirt out of fabric from some shirt I had in high school or something and pair it with one of my moms oversized blazers from the 80's and walk down the street and someone would be like, "Where'd you get that?"
