Why photography?
This is such a hard question to answer because it’s kind of difficult for me to put it into words, I’ve always been interested in the arts and being creative. I think the reason I love photography because of the feeling I get while composing and shooting images. I love putting together concepts in my head, and putting them together and seeing them in their final form, I love seeing people’s reaction when they look at my pictures and knowing that I caused that reaction. For me, photography is an excellent creative outlet.
What made you so passionate about it?
Seeing all the possibilities within the photography field I think is what really made me passionate about the medium. There are limitless possibilities within photography, people literally are always going to need pictures. You could do fashion photography, model headshots, event photography. Photography could be incorporated into almost anything you think of. Another thing that made me passionate was.
How long have you been into photography?
I’ve been into photography for about 3 years but I’ve only been seriously shooting for 2 years.
How would you describe your shooting style?
I love making use of natural light and bold colors in my photographs, I use vsco cam to edit a lot of my work because I like my pictures to have the feel of photos shot on 35mm film. I’ve been told that my work has a distinct style, but I think I’m still developing it.
What accomplishments have you made so far?
Currently I’m the photographer/videographer for my school’s modeling team, New Generation Models. I also serve as the photo editor at my school’s student run publication, The Searchlight. I’ve been featured in Utter Couture’s blog to promote my gofundme campaign, and two of my images have been chosen for VSCOcam’s curated VSCOgrid. I plan on submitting one of my images to the Scholastics Art and Writing Awards sometime soon, so I’m hopeful for a gold key award.
What do you see yourself doing in the next 5 years?
In 5 years I would be in my Junior year of College for fashion photography, I could see myself being an art director or freelance photographer for a fashion publication. I could also see myself selling prints, and zines on the side maybe.
Do you think photography is a hard field to get into?
Definitely, anytime you go into a creative career field you’re going to experience a lot of competition, setbacks, and a lot of “no’s”.
Is photography your career choice or is it just a hobby?
Photography at the moment is most definitely my career choice. I want to make money doing what I love, and right now photography is what I love. I don’t want to grow up and be like one of those adults that let life get in the way so they have to go to a job they hate everyday, and do what they love on the side.
What advice would you have for beginners?
Just look at other great photographers, find work that you like and get inspiration from that. A lot of what I learned about photography came from watching videos, and actually taking time to learn about my camera. Shooting in manual is definitely a must to learn because you need to know how to control light in order to convey a mood in your images. FIlm is also cool to experiment with, I’m still learning about that.
